Mental/Emotional Wellness

There are a lot of factors that go into mental and emotional wellness, but for right now, we will mainly be focusing on stress.

The three stages to stress are the:

Alarm Stage

Resistance Stage

Exhaustion Stage

During this stage, your body goes into fight, flight, or freeze, and you receive a rush of adrenaline

The resistance stage leaves you feeling exhausted, tired, and weak. You may even begin to feel like you’re no longer stressed.

Once in the exhaustion stage, your body can no longer handle the stress it’s under.

When dealing with stress,

Understand, the stress is not permanent and the situation will pass

Focus on the most important parts

Make sure your priorities are in place

And create a plan to solve it

When helping a friend with stress

Reassuring things will be okay

Be a good listener

Help them understand the situation

Help them make a plan

During stressful situations, your body may be triggered into a defense mechanism, and different people may have different defense mechanisms. These defense mechanism's include:

Denial- Refusing the reality of the situation

Escape- Running from the problems through excessive sleep or reading

Rationalization- Justifying actions through excuses

Projection- Blaming others for your own feelings towards them

Repression- Blocking out unpleasant memories

Identification- Acting like a person they admire

Displacement- Taking your emotions out on the wrong people

Regression- Retreating back into childlike or adolescent behaviors

Compensation- Trying to make up for a lacking quality by overperforming in another area
